What this counter does
A word counter is useful for reports, emails, exam answers and website pages. Officers writing a statement of facts, a sea protest or a training note often need a quick count before the text goes into a company form that has a limit. This page runs only in your browser. The text is not uploaded.
How the counts are made
Words are split on spaces and line breaks. Empty pieces are ignored. Characters include spaces. A second figure shows characters without spaces. Sentences are split on full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, which is a common silent-reading speed.
Who should use it
Useful for anyone drafting text on board or ashore. It does not check spelling or grammar.
