What is Wind Chill?
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body due to the flow of air. Higher wind speeds make cold temperatures feel even colder on exposed skin.
Formula used
This calculator uses the standard North American wind chill formula (based on Celsius and km/h):
Wind Chill = 13.12 + 0.6215×T − 11.37×V0.16 + 0.3965×T×V0.16
Where T = air temperature in °C and V = wind speed in km/h.
Example
- Temperature = 0°C
- Wind = 20 knots
- Wind Chill ≈ −7.5°C
Who is this for?
Useful for deck officers, crew working on deck in cold weather, and anyone assessing exposure risk during cold windy conditions at sea.
Important note
Wind chill applies only when air temperature is below 10°C and wind speed is above a few knots. It does not apply in warm conditions.
