What is True Wind vs Relative Wind?
Relative (Apparent) Wind is the wind felt on the ship. It is a combination of the true wind and the wind created by the ship’s own movement.
True Wind is the actual wind over the ground (or sea surface).
How this calculator works
It uses vector calculation (wind triangle) to solve for true wind speed and direction from ship speed, course, relative wind speed and relative wind direction.
Example
- Ship Speed = 12 knots
- Ship Course = 090°
- Relative Wind = 18 knots from 045°
- Result will show True Wind speed and direction
Who is this for?
Useful for deck officers, navigators and anyone who needs to convert anemometer readings (relative wind) into true wind for weather reports or passage planning.
