What this page is for
In a real distress the first action is the GMDSS alert from the radio installation, following the posted card at the console. Voice MAYDAY on VHF 16 or the assigned distress frequency follows the standard format: MAYDAY three times, the ship’s identity, position, nature of distress, assistance required and number of persons. This page only helps you write that format for drills and familiarisation.
Important
Never transmit a practice MAYDAY on air except under an authorised exercise with the word EXERCISE used as required by procedure. False distress alerts waste SAR assets and are an offence. Use the ship’s GMDSS operating manuals and the company SMS for live equipment.
Who should use it
Useful for cadets and officers practising the spoken format before a drill. The official distress card next to the radio remains the controlling guide.
