Cooling Load Estimator

Q = ṁ × cp × ΔT for water or air flow through a cooler.

What cooling load means

Cooling load is the heat that must be removed from a space or a fluid each second. On ships it is used for AC plants, provision rooms and jacket-water or scavenge-air coolers. The basic sensible-heat formula is Q = ṁ × cp × ΔT. One ton of refrigeration is 3.517 kW.

How this calculator works

Enter mass flow in kg/s and the temperature drop of the fluid. For water, 1 m³/h is about 0.278 kg/s. Air needs the mass flow from fan volume and density. The result ignores latent heat (moisture) and heat gains through bulkheads, so an AC plant calculation will be higher than this sensible-only figure.

Who should use it

Useful for engineers checking a cooler duty. Use the maker’s heat-balance for official plant capacity.
